When Pam & Stuart decided to retire into the CBD they had strong individual views, but both concurred that they wanted bold, but simple and contemporary design. Having lived in a Jack Manning designed home they knew, as Pam says, ”Architecture is the highest form of art, you live with it around you every day”. With this mantra at the forefront, they entrusted Adam Mercer to collaborate with their long-standing love affair with good design, and to challenge the perception of Urban living. Both Manning & Mercer Senior (Dick) were contemporaries of the influential Group Architects and shared their pared-back philosophy. Adam delivered a strong building, touchingly evocative of his father's earlier works in its use of materials: raw concrete block, steel beams, cedar joinery and sliding walls. ”The home challenges people's perceptions of urban living, minimal hardness and regional styles”, Adam says, by which he means urban living needn't be cramped and uncomfortable, minimalism is seductive when it has the right materials and details, and Hamilton can foot it stylistically with the rest of the country. Greeted with the mass of a street-facing block wall (26,000 blocks in the build), the vast pivoting front door reveals the drama of the vertical stairwell with clerestory light-wells allowing an ever-changing play of light across the walls. This opens to the enormous living space that spills onto the concrete courtyard. The sense of volume is apparent with an apprx. 370m2 expanse of apartment filled with an abundance of natural light, and with ample storage that is often lacking with inner city living. Designed for extended family to enjoy on a drop-in basis along with grandchildren being able to run freely around without pretentiousness... this is a space for living in while admiring talented designed on a daily basis. You'll be able to invite 50 of your friends over for the house warming, heck why not invite more... they've held a wedding here for 100+ guests before, this truly is unparalleled urban living at its finest. Having received numerous NZIA awards, the judges citation sums it up ”the building is both strong and gentle, protective and open and emanates a serene peacefulness that makes it a wonderful place to live”.
